I was watching YouTube one day when I came across an MBC news segment saying that Turkey has become kind of a “holy place” for people struggling with hair loss around the world. It caught my attention right away. Since it was on the news, and people kept saying it’s both affordable and popular, I thought, “I should probably go there someday.” After looking into it more seriously, I finally decided to make the trip.
While doing my research, I found this community, and seeing all the detailed reviews gave me confidence to reach out and move forward.
If you decide to go, the first thing you’ll need to do is book your round-trip flight yourself. I really recommend taking a direct flight if possible. Personally, I booked a round trip from Incheon to Istanbul with Turkish Airlines—3 nights and 4 days—for about 950,000 KRW.
Before leaving, I exchanged about 4 million KRW into US dollars (I did it in advance since my flight was at dawn and I was worried the exchange booth might be closed). I also bought a SIM card ahead of time from Coupang and brought it with me.
The flight took a little over 11 hours. Once I landed in Istanbul, I popped in my SIM, activated roaming, and contacted “Turki-aneun-namja” (the coordinator). After picking up my luggage, I met the driver who was waiting for me and headed straight to the hotel. I unpacked, exchanged some dollars into lira at a nearby exchange office, grabbed a meal around the hotel, and that was pretty much the first day. The hotel itself was clean and comfortable.
The next morning, breakfast started at 7 a.m., so I ate and then got on the shuttle van to meet Irem, who accompanied me to the clinic. I was surprised at how well she spoke Korean. We arrived at the hospital around 8 a.m., had a consultation, shaved my head, marked the transplant areas, and then started the procedure.
The surgery lasted a little over 5 hours, from about 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., with one quick bathroom break. Honestly, the most painful part was the anesthesia shots at the back of the head when they harvested the grafts. After that, it was manageable. My advice: speak up and express your opinions during the procedure—it really helps. Once the anesthesia part is over, you’ll be fine. Afterward, I had a quick meal and headed back to the hotel. That wrapped up Day 2.
Breakfast at the hotel wasn’t bad at all. There was no need for a ticket or anything—just walk in and eat. I even snapped a quick photo in front of the hotel after breakfast.
On Day 3, I had breakfast again, strolled around near the hotel a bit, and then headed to the airport for an early morning flight back home.
It was my first time in Turkey, and wow—there are so many cars in Istanbul. Honestly, it felt like even more than Seoul. In Seoul, it’s only really packed during rush hour, but in Istanbul, the traffic is heavy pretty much all day, everywhere.
I didn’t do any sightseeing this time—just focused on the procedure and rested at the hotel. Looking back, I do feel a little regret about not exploring more, but overall, it was fine.
Most importantly, I felt really supported thanks to “Turki-aneun-namja” and the two Irems who guided me throughout the process. That was such a big relief, and I’m grateful to them.
The post-op pictures look a bit scary, but hey—it’s all worth it for the sake of hair. I’ll share another update once I see more progress.
